You must draw upon powers beyond your own.I recently pulled out my journal and began thinking of the recurring thoughts that have been running through my head.As someone who constantly seeks change, luckily, many of my thoughts are not recurring.Im constantly meeting new people, working on new projects, reading new books, and engaging in new environments.I seek heavily to create new and transformational experiences constantly.However, there are still a few recurring thoughts I have yet to address. There are things I know are holding me back from the life I truly want.So I made a list of EVERYTHING I wanted in my life.EVERYTHING I could think of.It was a huge list.I wrote about my family and the welfare, health, and success of my children. My wife and I recently adopted three kids who we fought for in court for three years.Now my wife is pregnant with twins Its crazy.I wrote about how I wanted my kids to be happy, healthy, and successful.I wrote about all of my financial dreams. And my career dreams. And my health dreams. I wrote about the person I wanted to become and the life I wanted to live. I wrote about all the people I wanted to help.By the end of all of this, I had a huge list.I loved looking at that list.Then I thought about the recurring thoughts and patterns.Am I willing to give up what Ive got in order to have something better? Are they climbing the corporate ladder and emphasize job titles on their resume? Ill bet they would be motivated by including verbiage about the seniority and management focus of that open position you have. Do they work at an employer and team that you know works their employees to death with long hours? Emphasize the flexibi lity of your position or if they would work for a friendly management team, write that. Try to figure out what would make the candidate want your job chances are its simple logistics like location, money, company environment, or management team.Portray your Competence People get emailed all the time from recruiters that spend one second looking at their resume. They get emailed for the wrong jobs and even for positions that are in the wrong location. Make sure that you take special care to determine exactly what the candidate does, and only email them if you have a good match. Your communications should portray a competent recruiter that really took the time to understand their experience. Including simple, personal notes like I saw you worked with SAP ABAP back at IBM and was wondering if you would like to again do mora than entice the candidate they demonstrate your recruiting abilities and make the candidate comfortable.Highlight Connections Do you have any personal or professio nal connection with the candidate you are trying to recruit? Have you recruited for one of the companies for which the candidate worked? Did you get their name from a reference? Did you have a friend at their college? Do you know some hiring managers from their current employer? Anything personal helps. Me, too Since we should all probably at least pretend to work while we wait, here are a few inspiration career lessons from everyones favorite Amazon. 1. Rebrand yourself as neededBelieve it or not, Wonder Womans original name was Suprema, the Wonder Woman- not quite as catchy. I gathered a lot of Wonder Woman trivia from DCs book Wonder Woman A Celebration of 75 Years, including the fact that Wonder Woman creator William Moulton Marston conferred with his editors and realized a shorter name worked better for his superhero. In the original versions, Wonder Woman hailed from Paradise Island, though since the 1980s, her home place is called Themyscira. During the 1960s, Wonder Woman was effectively stripped of her powers and rebranded as a mod spy type along the lines of Emma Peel in The Avengers. People hated that incarnation and gave way to the Lynda Carter TV version which was considered the ideal for decades. Wonder Woman workplace warrior lesson Rebrand as needed and when needed. Just because your original idea or title seemed perfect at the time, doesnt mean its the ideal fit. And if you make a mistake, try to find a way back to what used to work.2. Sisterhood is powerfulAs an Amazon, Wonder Woman emerged from a matrilineal culture that valued not only traditional womens skills, but also taught even princesses to be warriors. And despite the somewhat differing origin story in the comic books, the 1970s TV series, subsequent cartoon versions and the new movie, theres always a common thread of women teaching and supporting each other. Marston was known as both a suffragette and feminist who some say created Paradise Island as a hypothetical model for a woman-run workplace. When campaigning for Hillary Clinton during the last election, Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright sparked controversy when she said, theres a special place in hell for women who dont help each other. Albright later clarified in a column in The New York Times saying I absolutely believe what I said, that women should help one another, but this was the wrong context and the wrong time to use that line. Albright still stuck with her philosophy that women have an obligation to help one another. But dont vote or hire someone just because shes a woman vote for a woman or hire a female candidate, or mentor a younger female co-worker (or throw your support behind a female superhero) because you believe her the best person for the job. Theres ample reason to give women a chance, however. Turn weakness to strengthWe all know (and many of us covet) Wonder Womans indestructible bullet deflecting bracelets, but the origin story of her defenses adds another layer to their power. Marston borrowed heavily from Greek mythology in creating his most famous character. At one point, the Amazons were captured and enslaved by Hercules, who forced them to wear what were referred to as- wait for it- The Bracelets of Submission. Even after they gained independence, the Amazons wore the bracelets proudly as a symbol of past oppression. Better yet, those former symbols of enslavement became powerful protective tools. I know someone who keeps every rejection letter hes ever received as inspiration to remind him just how far hes come in his career. It also reminds him to stay humble. 5. Put your own spin on thingsIn the n ew movie, Wonder Woman is portrayed by Israeli actress Gal Gadot with a charming accent along with some warrior moves probably at least partially inspired by Gadots time in the Israeli Defense Forces. Gadot has been quoted as saying that her military service prepared her for Hollywood. Wonder Woman workplace warrior lesson For some reason, since Wonder Woman is recognized as an American superhero, shes always been portrayed as being strictly American, with her American flag inspired costume and California girl accent in the TV version. But Wonder Woman can adapt and look different, and so can we. How Second-Person Point of View Is Used in FictionHow Second-Person Point of View Is Used in FictionSecond-rolle pointof view is a form of writing in which the point of view of a narrative work is told in the voice of the onlooker, which is you, the reader. For instance, the text would read, You went to school that morning. The second-person point of view is rarely used infictionbecause of its difficulty level. It is hard to develop a set of characters and a story in which the second person is appropriate. Additionally, it is not easy to maintain a second-person narrative in a longer piece of writing, as opposed to a short piece of work such as a one-page essay. It is far easier to develop a fictional character and tell the story through their eyes and experiences. Despite its difficulty, there are a few examples of works told in the second-person point of view. Tom Robbins Half Asleep in Frog Pajamasis an example of a novel told in second-person. Many of the stories in Lorrie Moores book Self-Help are also written in second-person. Distinguishing From Other Devices Dont confuse second-person point of view writing with a writer who is simply addressing the reader. Many major authors, including classic writers such as Charles Dickens and Jane Austen, actually speak directly to the reader, expressing their commentary regarding the plot or characters. Contemporary writers of blogs and non-fiction will also address you (the reader) when offering advice or insights. Another point of confusion is distinguishing second-person point of view from a third-person point of view, which can be limited or omniscient. When a writer addresses a question to the reader, the writer is writing from the third-person point of view. For example, Do you enjoy pot roast as much as I do? It is a question presented by a pot-roast loving third-person narrator. On the other hand, You love pot roast, so you plan to cook it tonight, is an example of the use of the second-person point of v iew. Why Choose Second-Person Point of View? It is a legitimate question. Most people naturally write in first-person or third-person because it takes a great deal of effort and intention to write in the second-person. Generally, people write in the second-person because They want to immerse the reader in the experience of actually being the protagonistThey want to engage the reader in an extremely rich sensory experience that can best be accomplished by forcing the reader to imagine himself or herself as part of the experienceThey want to write a particularly persuasive or engaging passage that will be most effective when written in the second-personThey want to test their writing skills by using a new and different style of writing While there is certainly nothing wrong with experimenting with any type of writing, second-person writing requires a good deal of practice and finesse. Dont be surprised if your first efforts end with readers being confused or frustrated. Only by re fining your technique will you become an accomplished writer in this difficult form.
